Post-Doctoral Positions

Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Princeton University

  • The Sharmin and Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies at Princeton University invites applications for a post-doctoral or more senior research position in the culture, history, politics, economics or religion of Iran and the Persian Gulf region in the 19th – 21st century, with preference for the cultural aspects of the above, starting in September 2019
  • This full-time twelve-month position may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance and funding,
  • PhD required; the post-doctoral research associates may not pursue another degree while in this appointment, nor may they hold any other fellowships or visiting positions concurrently

Post-Doctoral Position, Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL)

  • Post-doctoral position (12 months renewable once) for the project: “Avicenna East & West I: Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs” (FRS-FNRS; UCLouvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium)
  • Aim of this project on the commentaries on the Qasidat al-nafs attributed to Avicenna is twofold: (1) to provide a better understanding of how Avicenna’s theory on the soul was received, interpreted and transformed in this tradition of commentaries; and (2) to document the attitude towards Avicenna’s legacy, and falsafa in general, in Islamic society

Racialization of Islam Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Yale University

  • The Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration at Yale University invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Associate position under its initiative to study the Racialization of Islam beginning on 01 July 2019
  • Candidate will be expected to be in full-time residence and to teach one course in academic year 2019-2020 related to the interdisciplinary field of Muslim American studies

Post-Doctoral Researcher, CNRS

  • Researcher will be recruited within the framework of the ANR-DFG EGYLandscape project; this project aims at developing scholarly research about the rural history of Egypt in pre-modern times, from the 13th to 18th c.
  • The scholar will be part of the « French team » and work under the supervision of Nicolas Michel. He/She will be attached to the research laboratory “Institut de recherches et d’études sur les mondes arabes et musulmans” (IREMAM, UMR 7310), at Aix-en-Provence, and will be integrated to the IREMAM team of historians.
  • Recent thesis in the history of the Near East from 13th to 19th C., or in the history of Egypt during the same period (British Occupation 1882-1922 included) preferred; thesis defended preferably after 01 May 2017

Post-Doctoral Researcher in Algerian Culture and History, University of Helsinki

  • Three-year post-doctoral position working on the project “VoCAL Articulations of Identity and Empire (CALLIOPE)” which runs from March 2018 – February 2023 and is directed by Dr. Josephine Hoegaerts
  • Project studies how audible performances of public speech have influenced political decision making in the 19th century
  • Candidates will be expected to take charge of research on one geo-political area or axis of ‘exchange’ covered in CALLIOPE, and focus on vocal practices of political representation within ‘French’ Algeria (ca. 1830-1920)
  • Appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the project (such as history, cultural studies, political science, language, or anthropology), as well as have the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position

Imam Ali Chair for Shi‘i Studies and Dialogue among Islamic Legal Schools — Hartford Seminary

  • Open rank; Ph.D. or its equivalent is required.
  • A Shi‘i scholar with a distinguished record that includes an academic doctorate, religious training and lived religious commitments.
  • The appointment is to the core faculty of the seminary and will be a member of the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations.
